I teach physics in a secondary school; GCSE* (for 15-16 year olds) and Advanced Level(for 17-18 year olds). I've been doing this on and off for the last 39 years.
I have always been regarded by colleagues as a fairly effective teacher. My pupils normally achieve satisfactory or better grades.
When I first left teaching in the early 1980's I was a head of department. I found that I did not like the way things were shaping up with the Thatcher government. When Sir Keith Joseph suggested that voluntary extra-curricular activities (training a football team and taking them to a match on Saturdays, say) be written into teachers' contracts that was, for me, a final straw.
Schools run on good will. This is basic.
Out of where on earth did this Philistine crawl. He looked like a nervous intellectual type. The system was in his hands....yet he appeared to understand less than nothing.
In those days, it must be admitted, I did not understand much myself.
I worked in the building trades as a self-employed operator until my body gave out about 10 years ago. I returned to the classroom.
It pays the rent.
It has been horrible but fascinating to observe the changes that have taken place over the decades. I, like many others, loathe the culture that now predominates inside schools (and, seemingly, more or less everywhere else). Yet I have, painfully and perhaps shamefully, survived inside this system (not including an episode of being sacked for 'gross misconduct' then winning in court under the 'Whistleblowing Act' a year or so later....but that's another story).
However, over the last year or two I have found myself struggling in new ways. Some of this is due to way I upset some (a minority of) staff by voicing opinions about bankers, think-tanks, politicians, Ofsted and our collaboration with the programmes of social engineering we are all required to inflict on the innocents in our charge.
......but now there is another factor. I feel I don't quite know how to teach my subject any more. I am increasingly aware that the GCSE exams have become simply quizzes, like an episode of "Who wants to be a Millionaire?". There is no noticeable testing of understanding of the subject. I had a lesson inspection and did not score well (4 on a scale of 1 to 5).
My head of department (she has been teaching for 5 years) said, "You strayed outside the syllabus once or twice".
I said that I was answering questions from the class that required me to do so.
"You should not do so."
She said, "Also, some of the children were confused occasionally."
I replied that " It's physics. This is not unusual. Some of the concepts are difficult."
"You don't have to bother with all that. Just go through the information required by the syllabus. It's all on two pages of the revision guide. That's all they need to know. There's no reason they should be confused." (I truly promise I am not making this up)
"What about the formulae? Don't the children need to understand those?"
"No. Just show them how to put the numbers in."
"So", I asked, "You are asking me not to try and help students understand the subject. They must learn to simply repeat facts that they need to know and learn how to select formulae from the list at the front of the exam booklet (given in words not pesky symbols. Correct units are on the exam paper in the space before the gap for their numerical answer), then put two numbers in to find the value of a third.
"Yes", she said.
I thought to myself.
"Am I already dead?"
The appalling thing is that I know she is right. This is what the system now demands of a teacher......and we are expected to prepare multi-media differentiated lessons delivered in a variety of teaching/learning styles (hands on/group activities/practical/paper exercises/didactic) to impart information during the lesson that is little more than a stupifying fact-fest.
This is how the system wants children (and citizens) to function.
DON'T BOTHER YOUR HEAD TRYING UNDERSTANDING ANYTHING. THAT'S SOMEONE ELSE'S BUSINESS.
KNOW WHAT WE WANT YOU TO KNOW.
FOLLOW PROCEDURES.
THIS IS HOW YOU WILL FIND SUCCESS IN LIFE.
NOT THROUGH DEVELOPING YOUR MIND AND YOUR GOD-GIVEN TALENTS.
NOT BY ASKING QUESTIONS(THAT WE WILL REFUSE TO ANSWER, BY THE WAY).
NOT BY LEARNING IN THE AGE OLD WAY, FROM YOUR OWN MISTAKES AND EXPLORATIONS BY TRIAL AND ERROR.
BE OBEDIENT.
(shouts)FOLLOW PROCEDURES AND BE OBEDIENT.
Of course, the system will never admit that this is what is going on. The system is all for 'real education' and 'improving standards'.
Bogus Bulls*it.
Standards! standards! standards! Poor teaching! More inspections! More self-regulation! More progress assessments! More performance assessments! More targets! More Exams!
For the last 30 years politicians and teachers have talked of little else but raising standards.......and this is where all this often intense and bullying blather has taken us.
Let those who would weep, weep now.
The important parts of the process are subliminal (but becoming less so) and recognised keenly by the unconscious mind that understands instinctively what it must do to survive.
I got quite angry about this and about another issue (a 'performance management' booklet I had disrespectfully filled in). I realised I was, by my behaviour, in effect offering my resignation. It would have quickly come to that. My HOD, being a kind individual (who had not disagreed with any of my objections but who is keen to please her superiors and has read ALL of the OFSTED literature), asked me to think again and gave me a couple of hours to reconsider my approach to these issues. If there was anywhere to go, an alternative, I would have resigned. If I had the money I would not have resigned, I would have walked.....but this culture is everywhere and indeed more savagely implemented in other institutions. I had to either make myself unemployed (again) and, probably, unemployable, or swallow my pride and compromise my integrity (excuse me for that self-regarding joke. I still prefer to believe I have some integrity left.....but I'd better face it. We are all compromised by our participation in this culture. Maybe I'm just learning to get a little more honest about a situation that has been much the same for many years, though I do know this. They couldn't have got away with this 'quiz' sh*t 10 or 15 years ago. People would not have stood for it. Now, however, we are that much more inanimate. That much less confident, more discouraged, more helpless. These people know what they are doing. They proceed with caution. Step-by-step. Softly, softly, .........catchee monkey.......and here we are.....)
Almost nothing can be done within the system. The lockstep is in place. We are now surviving within a 'soft tyranny'. It is conform or lose everything.
It is obviously the same within our political culture at large.
We are being trained into helplessness and until something major changes, that is exactly what we are.
Helpless.
I have been told by Bishop Williamson, a friend, that " It's all over. The game, for now at least, is lost."
" Man has turned from his God and this is the consequence."
I'd like to think there is still a point in trying to organise resistance to the bankster plutocrats, to these creators of wars and financial collapses, to these Luciferians who would displace God, to these destroyers of our children's futures, to these degenerate parasites who rob humanity of the fruits of their labour, to these fiends who have driven Christ from our communities, to these devils who have undermined social cohesion through faith, family, race and nation......
.......to these Frankfurt School-Communist-Globalists who understand that the way to destroy us is to redesign the style of question in science examinations.
Here's one from last year (this is from the 'chemistry' section, OCR board GCSE)
Q8. Mr Roberts painted his door red.
(Half A4 page-sized picture of the front of a detached house, windows, a garden, a tree, a nice bright sun, Mr Roberts and, of course, a door......in case you are having trouble imagining a door in context.)
(a) Why did Mr Roberts paint his door?
(There is a definite answer to this by the way. It is on page 161 (or something) of the Revision Guide.)
YOU! AT THE BACK! STOP LAUGHING. IT'S NOT FUNNY.
It really isn't.
(thinks again)
"Am I already dead?"
PS
Quotes from Bertrand Russell's book, "The Impact of Science on Society", 1953
"I think the subject which will be of most importance politically is mass psychology.... Its importance has been enormously increased by the growth of modern methods of propaganda.
“Of these the most influential is what is called 'education.' Religion plays a part, though a diminishing one; the press, the cinema, and the radio play an increasing part....
“It may be hoped that in time anybody will be able to persuade anybody of anything if he can catch the patient young and is provided by the State with money and equipment."
"Although this science will be diligently studied, it will be rigidly confined to the governing class.
“The populace will not be allowed to know how its convictions were generated.
"Diet, injections, and injunctions will combine, from a very early age, to produce the sort of character and the sort of beliefs that the authorities consider desirable, and any serious criticism of the powers that be will become psychologically impossible."
“When the technique has been perfected, every government that has been in charge of education for a generation will be able to control its subjects securely without the need of armies or policemen."

Really can't cope with any more of this stuff. Resigned.

Excellent post, Kev! You are spot on. Perhaps you have read the works of this man? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Taylor_Gatto
ReplyDeleteIf not, you should. You two are one in the same in your sentiments and he has loads of information, research and opinion as to how it got this way.
Thanks Timster. I'll have a look.
ReplyDeleteKB
Great link Timster. I particularly like point 5 that I had not fully understood.
ReplyDeleteQuote:
5. It teaches students a kind of self-confidence, which require constant confirmation by experts (provisional self-esteem).
6. It makes it clear to students that they can not hide, because they are always supervised.
There you have it! The bleeding EXPERTS (The more I think about this the more keenly aware I am of the manner in which I betray the children I teach). Experts, experts, experts.
Largely fools and traitors. To some extent we have all failed as adults in this respect.
It's the monthly direct deposit that does it.
I second that, cheers Timster.
ReplyDeleteThe whole topic (from the angle of your experience) illustrates that none of us are free. If you cannot say no then you are not free. Bills, mortgages or credit cards are merely the threads of the cobwebs.
It matters not how they decorate the bars if none can escape.
Kevin,
ReplyDeleteWell what do you expect when we live in a Socialist state moving into communist society?
Our masters don't want a society of critical thinkers and to paraphrase George Carlin, they want a "people just smart enough to work the machines and dumb enough to accept the increasingly lower paid jobs with longer hours and not question the fact they've been getting f*cked over by a system that threw them overboard 30 f*king years ago!"
They don't want an intelligent populous that will question them in their misdemeanors. They want a society that will happily lap up their doublspeak.
They attacked Nationalism, the love for one's country and people, because they were about to destroy that culture by opening the floodgates, allowing in millions, who had been brought up with different values to our own. They infiltrated every major establishment with which to rewrite society into how they want it.
Thus we have a situation where many children leave school unable to write properly and construct basic sentences.
They are dumbing down and have been dumbing down society for years now, ever since the wonderful 60's when everyone decided we should all just love everyone, all mix together and that all morals and cultures were undoubtedly relative. We now see the outcome of this warped ideology. Oh don't get me wrong, I've nothing against loving everyone, but I do respect that putting a sheep into a cage with a lion (multiculturalism) isn't very good for the sheep is it?
Bishop Williamson knows the score. He's unable to even debate factual evidence on the greatest lie ever told, without the fear of imprisonment. And here was me thinking that the time of the KGB, the Gulags, the stasi and fascism was dead.....
Anyway, have a read of Michael Ruppert's "Collapse" to see that Oil's running out and we've built a society that can only run on it, with no alternatives in place when it all goes belly up - and it will, so realistically, teaching physics isn't really going to benefit anyone. If you want to teach then learn about first aid, survival techniques and horticulture, because these will vital in order to rebuild some form of society when the world stops. And it will, oh it very well will and no one has a clue about this whatsoever. LOL
P.S.
ReplyDeleteI did enjoy your post.
Very good summary of what is a depressing perspective. From my side of the nonlinear optics, as a parent, just having a child complete primary education I can look back at the whole 12 years and confirm something that a friend and I discussed, she is a veteran child minder and well known here abouts.
ReplyDeleteWe both came to the conclusion that the children are stolen from us and bar coded. No one notices and indeed perversely welcomes the denaturing process.
From the cattle barn built environment kindergarten & schools, I know cattle barns, to the gypsy teaching staff these children are stock. And just like stock absolutely no money other than the very necessary is spent on this very precious process.
Anyone trying to actually educate will be made unemployable. Not even self employed, UNEMPLOYABLE.
We have a very petty, RICO and vindictive state at work here.
Good work, I enjoyed your words.
You're welcome. In one of his books he describes in detail how Horace Mann led a delegation of educators to Prussia in the 1840's to look at their system of education. Mann was impressed and brought their philosophy back to our schools. The problem was that Prussia designed their system to produce soldiers. But the kids were attentive and quiet....Mann liked that.
ReplyDeleteThere's some good news. No one has ever taken over the world. They always fail. Some fail in spectacular fashion. It can be very bad in certain locations for extended lengths of time but there is always somewhere that is out of the reach of the demons of the moment.
ReplyDeleteIt's not necessary for me to name who is behind this sort of thing. We have more evidence than we could possibly need.
The point of greatest pressure and fury will be the cities and populous suburbs and those locations utterly dependent on energy grids and distribution of goods from further locales; something to keep in mind.
I'd be interested to see a copy of the physics exam in its present form. The issues you raise here need to be dealt with at once. - Monckton of Brenchley
ReplyDeleteThanks again Visible.
ReplyDeleteHow pleasing to have a post on this thread from one of my real heroes, the (main) individual who sank the man-made-global-warming hoax. I watched your talks (delivered all over the globe) on YouTube.
I will be responding privately forthwith.
The danger of a globally imposed carbon tax has not passed, of course. We must be on our guard and do all we can to fight any reincarnation of this globalist mechanism that pops its head above the parapet.
ReplyDeletelike Les you again are spot on.
ReplyDeleteI taught for 20 years and when A level Geography examiner was ordered to dumb down and give at least 50 per cent more marks for map interpretation questions etc.
That was the mid 90's!
After 10 years out I have failed to obtain even temporary post despite applying for over one thousand in past 6 months ----I have 4 degrees.
Invariably the teacher recruitment agencies demand that one completes the government funded and controlled TDA Return To Teaching course.
I refused to take up offer of place as the course while excellent pedagogy demands obeisance to social engineering, firmly anti-heterosexism, acceptance of Holocaustianity, empathy with now victicratic state-approved 'peripheral' groupings.
Despite inviting selection of prominent faith schools in London to be aware of such pressures on returnee teachers and likely influences on trainee teachers one never had even acknowledgement.
Kevi's piece, along with my years of diligent monitoring of dumbing down and feral ascendancy, ineluctably brings about the sensible conclusion to avoid teaching.

ReplyDeleteWhen the state took over education, (about 1890 or there abouts), the rest was inevitable. For about 2000 years, no state has done anything efficiently except kill people with professional armies. To visible, I would just make the observation that, although no one has succeeded in taking over the world so far, that does not prove it cannot happen in future. We are now in a shrunken world with an enfeebled population and instant communications. 1984 is behind schedule but arriving.
Thanks for the frontline line. The Viscount's heart may be in the right place but there is nowt anyone can do to correct things at this stage. I don't know who is behind it all but I believe the colleges of education and DES are where the foundations are.
ReplyDeleteExamination paper questions are changed to match the answers for the desired statistical outcome, nuff said?
Nick
Thank you for confirming my own observations and fears, no wonder they are doing their utmost to stop home education. I recall a recent story about a German couple who escaped to Texas and claimed assylum for this very reason, the Texan judge commenting that as Europe was no longer a democracy, he would allow their claim.
ReplyDeleteMy own belief is that the Global "planners" have each "region" earmarked to produce certain things-The UK being the supplier of cannon fodder for the continual war aginst Islam they have designed- after all, when you have no industry or prospects of employment, but are obedient then what else will there be but the army-and as the Starship Troopers film said, service earns free citizenship of the Federation! :-)
Seriously though, the reason de'etre of organisations such as Common Purpose become increasingly obvious. Our children have effectively been stolen from us, while we pay taxes for it to happen. As a fiend of mine commented on the Chemtrail programme- we pay-they spray!
we should keep the government off the education system. These terrorists have high jacked our education system and are manipulating everything. I'd like to see those stupid Americans who should "US #1" number one in what? nothing. not even war, the taliban is kicking US's ass right now. Pathetic culture we have.
ReplyDeleteHi Kev,
ReplyDeleteThe reason you are here right now is to notice and comment upon these things, it seems pretty obvious to me.
Also, I think you can reply upon a certain level of supernatural protection.
'The devil is in the details', go illuminate it!
I am local so if you need owt, find me.

ReplyDeleteI noticed your blog out spamming the globe on blog search and leaving links. After opening it up I was surprised to see you follow my blog and even further some of the blogs I follow, Flogging dead horses and incoming!
I have an old friend who is praying for a pole shift. He wants to see the whole house of hell collapse.
Cheers
Jim,
ReplyDeleteSee you around Croydon soon.
Dublin Mick,
Yes, You're an erudite fellow. I always pick up some new (and often surprising) information when I take a look at your blog.
What's this "spamming the globe on blog search mean?"
I watched my oldest son go K through 3 at the hands of the state system, and decided that he wasn't being given an education worth anything. Students are taught to appear to be clever (knowing some big words) but not taught how to think, or to see how events "here" had an impact on events "there". So my two sons have been home-schooled for the past six years. JOhn Taylor Gatto and Charlotte Isybert were two authors of influence on me.
ReplyDeleteI noticed the post by visible. I read a couple of his blogs. Would you please send a link to his manmade global warming talks? I would likes to see what he would say.
Thankyou

ReplyDeleteThere is a blog pulse where you can look up blogs that contain a certain subject line. Once in awhile when I have convinced myself I have something worth reading I go over and leave a link to it. I added your blog to my blog list. I guess I overlooked it for sometime as there are so many blogs these days.
Thank you very much for this heartfelt article. It proves we are not dead yet.
ReplyDeleteThanks all,
ReplyDelete....and 'guard'....good comment.....thanks.
Jim
ReplyDeleteI would say, quit work and start blogging full time. Your words have power behind them. Get the message out and circulate. Remember tho, the purpose for which you were born. It is coming to the surface. Find the hope, find others, unite.

Wish I could Jan. Responsibilities make this impossible for now.
